Blog numero 4

1. The word "tacit" is used in the essay Meaning to describe the different strategies and approaches used in design. This definition relies on the fact that both the viewer and the designer will recognize the differences and be aware of how those differences affect them and the situation. For example the use of tacit, is that a designer will be able to differentiate between a design situation of the "sleepwalker" and that of "reconceptualization." This is because the differences between the two are so distinct that there is no way they could be mistaken for one another.

2. "Old" and "New" ways of looking are ways in which the designer and the viewer take in not only the object, but also the situation in which the object is placed; and the effect that the combination of elements has on it.  In the old way of looking at things meaning is concentrated on the form, and only the form. The designer only takes into consideration the object itself, not any of the emotions it could evoke, or the situations that the object could be included in. The new way of designing the focus is on how the qualities of an object can combine to produce a meaningful situation. The designer designs with an intended viewing situation in mind rather then just for the form of an object. With the new meaning the object is looked at as more then a noun, it is a dynamic part of something greater.

I think a perfect example of the new way of designing is window displays. If you look at part of the display on its own it is nothing but a static object, but once it is placed within a greater context; in this case a window display, it becomes something striking and memorable. Like this one for Louis Vuitton, alone in the window the bag would be just another bag and people passing by would keep walking. This display however creates a visual experience and makes the bag memorable.

3. Meaning-in-situ
-Sleepwalking: When a designer creates meaning while "sleepwalking" they design with some recognition that the situation created may be important, but it often evokes an inapropriate response to the design, because they did not design for the proper situation.

-Complementing: In this meaning is created by taking the function of the object into consideration and designing to fit the functional requirements. These designs are very bland and don't go above and beyond the expected. A good example of this is the "pottery barn catalogue" way of design, everything is perfect in its place. While it looks nice and functions perfectly, there is nothing unexpected about it.

-Expanding: These designs go beyond the desired situation they suggest that there is deeper meaning meaning but designs are still within ones comfort realm. I believe the architecture at the Denver Art Museum is a perfect example of expanding meaning to create a wonderful experience.

-Opposition: With opposition designers think about the situation and then react to the meaning that it creates, and design around that. The goal of this is to design the opposite of what you would expect, and often creates a product-situation mismatch. Advertisements are a perfect example of this, especially fashion editorials, where the designer is showcasing their product in an unexpected setting, somewhere the product doesnt naturally belong.

-Reconceptualization: This design creates meaning based upon new assumptions made by both the viewer and the designer. These designs also take an unexpected approach in response to newly discovered needs. This image is an interesting way to look at reconceptualization because it is a couch created out of rubber tires, outside, at a college campus; all of which is completely unexpected.

4. Dance, Play, and Design have two major components in common: time and movement. All three are contained within these and have to fit within these confines. Music videos, especially pop music videos are great examples of the three combining to make a great piece. Bootylicious... Haha

5. A metaphoric running line is the elements of a story, this is traditionally found in a book form that connects one point to another. This running line encourages the reader to move from one page to the next. So, how does this apply to motion design and the narrative? The metaphoric running line is what holds it all together, without this there would be no reason to watch the piece created. Without this running line the viewer would begin to watch the piece and then after even a few seconds would loose interest. The viewer relies on the running line to get them from the beginning of the story to the end.
