:: Blog #4 ::

The word tacit is used to describe design that doesn't necessarily express any idea or emotion. Yet people can still have a reaction to it because of their own experiences. It is just implied.

The old view of meaning is where the object holds the experience. The form tells a story and creates the meaning in itself. In the new view, the framing of the situation or environment comes first, and then the meaning of the design is considered.

Sleepwalking.
Sleep walking is a blind form of design. Just making a design based on aesthetic appeal and not paying any attention to how the design contributes to the meaning behind the object.
 I find it interesting that it leaves a lot of open interpretation for the viewer.

Complementing.
This is essentially the opposite of sleepwalking. You consider the exact situation that the object creates and make a design that directly coincides with the objects form, function, features, etc. This could a less creative, yet often successful approach. Personally not a favorite.

Expanding.
Expanding is taking complementing a step further. You take the object and its direct meaning, and create a design that complements those obvious functions, but also highlights function outside the box. This is putting your own creative spin on the form of the object.

Opposition.
Opposition is the realizing the complement of the object, and purposely creating a design that is completely different, if not the exact opposite. This usually creates no meaning, which is the desired result.

Dance&Play.

The rhythmic motions of the body can directly influence design. A successful design creates a story. Certain aspects of the design can make your eye flow across the page using color, form, flow, scale etc. Even not changing something could create a solid rhythm through pages of a book. This rhythm usually creates successful designs.
